Are you drinking enough water? Optimal hydration is one of the most important things to maintain, for both health and beauty.

Water plumps cells (making you look younger),  is essential for digestion and elimination, acts as a solvent for crucial chemical reactions and also helps transport dissolved compounds into and out of cells.   You can, at a pinch, survive for weeks without food, but your body will collapse within 3 days without water!

It’s common for people to think that they think they are hungry, when in fact they are thirsty.  Drinking a glass of water 10 minutes or so before each meal (with a little juice in if you need flavour to encourage you!) will fill you up, nourish the system, and make you feel less hungry, so you are comfortable to eat less if that’s your aim.

Did you know that a dry mouth is not the only symptom of dehydration?   Constipation, headache, dry skin, dizziness, confusion, darker urine, tiredness can all potentially signal lack of fluid in the body.  (Of course, an upset tummy can cause dehydration, so it’s even more vital to keep up fluids if you have diarrhea or vomiting.)

So every day drink lots of water, some fruit juice, herb teas, plus foods with lots of fluids in them such as soups, stews, fruit etc. Ideally have only limited amounts of anything with caffiene in.  The total fluid consumption should be about 2 litres, depending on your size.

Tap water quality varies widely.  It’s common for water treatment plants to add lots of chemicals such as chlorine.  It may also contain other undesirable contaminants like toxic metal salts, hormones and pesticides.  If in doubt, use the best quality filter you can manage, or at least boil it before use. Bottled water is generally considered better, but can be expensive, and the plastic it often comes in can have an effect too.  Personally, I use a multi-stage filter plumbed in under my sink, which has a separate tap. It has a reverse osmosis level, then several layers of carbon filters.

Apply common sense to your fluid intake, and create good daily habits.  Your body will thank you!
